About the Roger Garlick Awards

OBJECTIVES

The Roger Garlick Awards were conceived in 1999 to recognise outstanding performance in the area of Media Strategy. The awards were named after the late Roger Garlick who died tragically at the pinnacle of his media career. He embraced the notions of media innovation and creative media strategy and was recognised for his pioneering efforts in this field.

Since it’s inception the awards have grown in stature with the 2000 winner going on to win a Gold Media Lion at Cannes. The Awards are an initiative of (AMASA) and have been long supported by Oracle Airtime Sales.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. The Awards are open to all parties involved in the use of media for advertising purposes, within South Africa, such as: advertising agencies, media agencies, clients / advertisers and media owners.
  2. All entries must relate either to an advertisement or to one single advertising campaign. Entries relating to more than one advertising campaign (even if promoting the same product) will not be accepted. Entries relating to different campaigns must be entered individually.
  3. Entries are eligible in all of the 11 official languages. The judges reserve the right to request translation of concepts from either the submitter or an independent person. Entries cannot be made without the prior permission of the advertiser.
  4. All media solutions submitted must be designed for implementation and must be designed within the context of a normal contract with the client.
  5. Entries must have been conceived, produced and exposed in South Africa.
  6. All media solutions must have been implemented in the period 1 January up to and including 31 December of the previous year in which the awards are held.
  7. Any entry which, up to and including the final day of judging has infringed any of the voluntary or regulatory codes of practice, is not eligible.

JUDGING

  1. All entries will be short listed based on voting by each of the judging panel and the Chairman based on the entry submissions.
  2. The jury will then meet where they will decide on the outright winners.
  3. Any judge with a direct interest in any particular advertisement will be requested to declare such interest and will refrain from marking and voting such an entry.

The decision of the judging panel in all matters relating to the awarding of the prizes is final and binding. The judging panel has the discretion to give or withhold any awards.

AWARDS

  1. THE ROGER GARLICK INNOVATION AWARD
Each year only one main Roger Garlick Award is presented. The entry and judging criteria will be based on the Cannes Lions judging criteria. Essentially the judges will be looking for innovation and creativity backed by a sound strategy.
