AMASA is the Advertising Media Association of South Africa. AMASA as a voluntary body focuses on media education, organises monthly meetings in open forums to share knowledge relevant to the advertising and media industries, has a bursary plan for those wanting to enter the world of media and organises annual workshops for planners, strategists and advertisers at all levels. AMASA also organises an annual Golf Day for fundraising. The Roger Garlick Award is an AMASA initiative too.

Consisting of hard working committee members who give freely of their time, Johannesburg and Cape Town's AMASA branches continue to ensure that each year it makes an accountable difference to those wanting to enter the world of media, and for personnel already in the industry, to gain knowledge and insight on a regular basis to assist them be on top of their game at all time.

AMASA’s Roger Garlick Awards align with MOST Awards

AMASA (Advertising Association of South Africa) and Wag the Dog Publishers have announced that this year’s Roger Garlick Awards (RGA) will be hosted at the MOST Awards event.

According to both AMASA and Wag the Dog, the principles behind MOST and RGA align seamlessly. Lyn Jones, AMASA’s Chairperson comments, “We’re delighted to be part of the MOST Awards, and are excited about the synergies between both initiatives going forward.”

Through a rigorous research programme with questions based on specific criteria, MOST recognises the top media agencies and media owner sales and marketing teams. This encourages staff to improve service levels, knowledge and skills, resulting in improved standards and efficacy.

RGA on the other hand was launched by AMASA in 1999, with the core aim to acknowledge innovative media planning. AMASA encourages the industry to raise the bar through creative thought and clever media plans, achieved in collaboration with media owners and delivering superior results for clients.

AMASA is calling for entries from all media agencies, strategists, creative agencies, marketers and media experts, with leading campaigns approved by client and flighted between 1 January 2011 and 31 May 2012. Entries close 6 July 2012 and finalists will be announced at AMASA’s monthly forum on 1 August 2012. The overall RGA winner will be announced at the MOST Awards event on the 6 September 2012.

2012 Roger Garlick Awards will cost R800 per entry. For entry forms, campaign criteria and further info, visit our Roger Garlick page. If your agency has developed campaigns that display outstanding media innovation, enter now!!

AMASA urges renewed industry memberships

The continued success of AMASA (The Advertising Media Association of South Africa) hinges on the existence of a strong and motivated membership. AMASA is calling on all members to renew their annual membership and for potential members from the media industry to sign up.

Fulfilling its fundamental mandate of providing education to the media advertising industry, all funds raised by AMASA through its membership and annual activities go towards delivering its Learnership Programme (ALP). The ALP is designed, in conjunction with partner media companies, to invest in the sustained future and growth of young talent in the media industry.

According to Gordon Patterson, Group MD of SMG, the fact that agencies select an individual candidate alongside AMASA, results in a greater development of media talent, and ensures that the student not only has the ability and skills sought, but the right chemistry.

“If we don’t invest in the youth of this country, we are going to have a very mediocre industry. The older media stalwarts are not getting any younger. Young and talented individuals bring a fresh perspective to the table,” says Gordon.

Over and above supporting the ALP through membership contributions, AMASA members receive regular newsletters, enjoy free entry into the monthly meetings, receive reduced rates at all workshops and get preferential bookings and special rates for the annual event.

Lyn Jones, AMASA’s Chairperson explains, “AMASA is dedicated to education and training within the industry and is dependent on membership fees to finance its objectives. We continually strive to keep AMASA memberships affordable for all and look forward to the industry’s support in 2012 through renewed and first time AMASA memberships.”

AMASA’s 2012 membership rates:

Corporate Membership - R1 200 per year plus R430 per person

Individual Membership - R 620 per person

Rates include 14% VAT and although corporate members are entitled to rotate membership cards within the company, a full and detailed list of member names must be supplied on the membership form for AMASA's database.
