Working closely with the AAA School of Advertising and the University of Johannesburg, committee members are responsible for setting exam papers, monitoring course material and for arranging top class lecturers who give freely of their time to impart their knowledge to learners.

Who should do the Course?
The course is essential for those who are either full time 3rd year AAA Marketing students OR those working full time, but would like to gain a solid grounding and knowledge of media planning, strategy and the SA media landscape. The course will provide participants with a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of media, their advantages and disadvantages of each media channel and ultimately provide students with the ability to develop a full media plan and strategy for a client or agency. The course is specifically designed for 3rd year full time AAA Marketing Students as well as Part time students (media sales staff, media buyers, junior media planners, clients or agency account executives/account managers). It’s for those who want to either get into media planning for a career OR who require a greater understanding of media strategy in order to improve their status as a brand manager, account manager or media buyer.

2. Bursary Fund
1. Johannesburg
AMASA’s Bursary Fund seeks to bring fresh media talent into the current staff-starved industry. Monies are accumulated through AMASA’s Fund Raising efforts each year.
The Bursary Fund will allow individuals to have a foot in the door at one of South Africa’s top media agencies. AMASA’s intention is to allow students with talent and potential full access to the industry and to gather real experience on the ground in order to kick start a career in Media. The Bursary Fund will call for applications from students and those interested in starting a career in media, from October each year. Following a successful interview process, bursaries will be announced and awarded in December or January of each financial year.

2. Cape Town
Please note qualifying applicants MUST first have been accepted at one of the advertising schools listed below. Please visit their websites to enquire about the closing dates for their application process for 2009. One of AMASA’s key initiatives is to raise funds to help further the education within the advertising & media industry. Thanks to your support in AMASA we have committed to a annual bursary to a well deserving PDI candidate worth at least R35,000 towards 1 years worth of tuition fees in 2009. Our first candidate selected by AMASA during 2008 was Luzuko Sicam. Luzuko had completed his 3 year diploma in Marketing at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2007. However he really wanted to get into advertising and required further funding to fulfill his wish to study a 1 year post graduate course at the AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town. We were very pleased to award this to Luzuko which have majority funded his studies to the value of R30,000, he is on track to now graduate from the AAA School in December 2008.

3. Annual Workshop
1. Johannesburg
AMASA’s annual workshop, held over four days in August at Little Switzerland in the Drakensburg is designed to equip delegates with the fundamentals of media planning and take them through a series of lectures where practical guidelines are given on how to construct a winning media strategy.
Our guest speakers are select media experts and captains of industry who give freely of their time. Delegates, in groups, will be asked to respond to an actual client brief with a full media strategy. A panel of judges will work through the resulting strategies, step by step with each group, providing practical and immediately useful guidance.

2. Cape Town
The annual AMASA Media Planning workshop is one of AMASA’s most successful educational activities. The 3-day workshop is an intense course aimed at media strategists and buyers as well as media owners, clients and other media-related partiesThe workshop covers negotiation skills, presentation skills etc. as well as the basic media planning tools and the planning processes and is intense, insightful, interesting & fun. Response to the workshop has grown year on year and it is an eagerly anticipated event on the media calendar. It has also gained industry recognition.

AMASA Textbook
After a successful launch of the Media Planning: Art or Science textbook in 2005 authored by Gordon Muller, the committee has put in place a strategy to launch an updated version of this highly successful study tool.
